ISSUE #04

Melbourne Pixel is back on your screen with Issue #04, and subtle upgrades is the theme. Not only are we once again bringing you the hottest creative talent from this wide brown land, as well as hot websites, resources, bars, and of course our regular illustrative feature from Blue Giant, but we have also added small upgrades all over the place.

You can now access PDF downloads of each article, or jump to a print-ready version of each one. On the right is a randomly generated link to previous articles, our mailing list is up to date, we have a new splash page (some people were finding it hard to enter the site...) and a new logo pack for you to download (link at the bottom of every page).

Also, Stray Cat is back once again with some killer banner stock from one of her recent trips! So get into it, and enjoy!

Original Angle
Hailing from sunny Brisbane, Paul is a young IT genius who dedicates his time traveling around this beautiful country delving into computers further than any of us probably thought possible. Some people might take this as a job, and work away day after day never looking up and out. Thankfully for us (and our readers), Paul is just as dedicated to using this perfect position to make his mark behind the lens.

Implementing both film and digital to achieve his breathtaking shots, Paul delivers on a level that makes most of us hide our happy-snap cameras in shame. Take one look at his gallery, and you'll understand why we had to find out who is behind it all, and just how he does it.

A Different Kind of Operation
Melbourne brews talent and creativity in all shapes and forms, but never one quite as lovely as Nicole Shenko. A singer and songwriter, Nicole has spent the last few years touring China, releasing an acclaimed album, jumping between Sydney and Melbourne and throwing herself into creating a sound she describes as 'Soft Orange': a deep groove based on a dance sensibility.

Our dedicated contributor Simon caught up with Nicole to get a deeper look into her world, and what she has been doing in the Australian music scene.

One Pixel at a Time
Delivering in the world of Isometric Pixel Art is a challenge most people would cringe at and likely run for the nearest exit. Unless of course your name is Rhys Davies, and you wave at the world from the city of churches. Showing skill and determination that reach far above his humble 21 years, Rhys has had a hand in the creative process and pixel artwork for various companies, and worked on titles familiar to us all.

Not only that, but he can actually explain Isometric Pixel Art. Bow before this man. Or, do what we did and have a run through his gallery, then bug him to answers some questions...

The Time Has Come
Even if you have never heard a song, you will recognise the name. Pennywise have been at the heart of punk rock's rebirth since the early 90's, and they haven't slowed down since. Producing album after album of short, sharp, high-speed hits, Pennywise raise the bar again and again, and built the credibility that labels them today as one of the most renowned Punk Rock acts.

Having not been to Melbourne for quite some time, when Pennywise announced their tour our resident mosh-addict Rob snatched up some tickets, flexed his PW tattoo, and prepared for the night of his life.

Literal Changes

Sleepers Publishing is an independent publishing house based in Melbourne. With a goal of raising the opinion of writing and publishing in Australia, as well as providing opportunities not only for established writers but for up-and-coming talent as well, we felt not only obligated to include them in an issue, but proud to do so.

Since 2003 Sleepers Publishing have been behind some of the most interesting and developmental literary events in this country, and our celebrated contributor Simon caught up with Louise Swinn and Zoe Dattner, founders of Sleepers Publishing, so you lucky readers can...well...ahem...read about them...

OUT AND ABOUT

We like to get outside every few months, and remind ourselves just what fresh air is all about. But where to go?

Hopetoun
416 Bourke Street
Surry Hills (Sydney) NSW

Ph: +61 2 9361 5257

www.hopetounhotel.com.au

This pub has everything you could want in a local. With bands playing every night of the week, a good selection of beers, and an easy-going environment, it is well worth the $5 cover charge to get in and park your ass on a stool at the bar.

If your after something more, they have a restaurant downstairs, serving up ok grub that tastes better as the night continues, a courtyard that is always quiet (no one seems to know it's there), and a pool table down the back for those who feel the itch.

So if you like a good pub meal, followed by a decent selection of beers and a game of pool, all whilst listening to variety of cover bands...well...why are you still reading, get down there!

Oh, and mention Melbourne Pixel to the staff at the bar to receive your free confused stare*!

* free confused stare is non-refundable. Cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotion. Hopetoun management reserve the right to kick you out on your arse.
