ISSUE #05

Welcome back once again! Another issue of Melbourne Pixel is here, and not soon enough! For those of you who missed us these last four weeks, never fear! Not only have we been working hard to bring you this latest issue, but we have begun plans to bring you Pixel-icious content every day! But enough about the future
and its flying cars, and back to the important stuff!

Issue #05 once again brings you the latest and greatest in this disturbed creative world Down Under, and as always we never hold back when shit gets crazy. This issue we celebrate! Not only are we still here (hooray! -Ed.), but Issue #04 was viewed by over 10,000 peoples in one month! We agree...holy crap! So, time now to sing praises to Lost At E Minor, Design Is Kinky, and of course our returning readers (i guess that's you huh...we love you!).

So once again enjoy this issue, with hot websites, resources, bars, and of course our regular illustrative feature from Blue Giant. Plus the lovely and talented people who are featured in the articles below!

Dancing, Crime and Getting Dirty
It's not often we come across a photographer that really stimulates our interest. I mean sure, respect to those out there following the craft, but really it is a unique moment when someone's work makes you stop, retrace your steps, and engage with their beautiful representation of life.

Did we have to travel for this? No way! Residing in 'sunny' Melbourne, Mad-dame is a young and talented photographer who already has a glowing reputation through more 'alternative' circles, and presents subjects and ideas with a blossoming talent that makes even career-photographers sit up and pay attention.

Squish Your Puppet
Creativity without bounds. It's what we stand for and why we exist. No matter what your doing, if it's creative, we are interested. And so brings us to the clay-covered hands of Al Oldfield. A clay animator. Didn't see that one coming did you?

Not only does this field of creativity require exceptional dedication and patience, but above all it needs to be dripping in personality. Enter Al. When he is not teaching knitting classes or leaping about at a Ska concert, Al is hunched over his clay models re-enacting Frankenstein by animating his imagination-fueled creations. And with better lighting.

We crashed Al's party to steal some of his time, and oh it was worth it!

A New Realm of Thinking
Design is a fickle bitch at the best of times. A hard field to master, and an even harder field to be successful in, it takes a true visionary to excel and stand out amongst the crowd of over-excited amateurs. With every second university student booting up pirate software and playing havoc with design, it can become hard to see through the clutter. But if you persevere, a studio like Buro North, and in particular Soren Luckins, are your prize.

Soren is an established designer, artist, industrial designer, and general creator of mind-twisting visuals. Having studied in both Melbourne and Germany, he brings forth excellent examples of what the mind is capable of.

Certified Influence
Leading the way for Australian Hip-Hop, the Hilltop Hoods are at the top of their game, bringing the whole genre to a new level as they hit radio stations, music video programs, and move their sales to Platinum status in Australia. From humble beginnings in Adelaide, to becoming the driving force of Aussie Hip-Hop with Obese Records, this trio from the city of churches have people from all walks of life tapping and head-bobbing to their fresh style of sound.

So when they announced their tour for the new album 'The Hard Road', of course we here at Melbourne Pixel were beating each other out of the way to score tickets to see one of the best live shows this country has to offer.

Critical Depth

How often do you see artwork and think 'I really want that on my wall at home'. I mean think that and actually seriously consider it. Perhaps you offer a guy some cash for it, or beg and beg until they kick you screaming into the street...well look no further, this is that kind of art!

Nat's work is a unique blend of urban-influenced art that smacks of stencil graffiti and raw passion for the final result. Taking advantage of both traditional and digital mediums to produce his underground style, Nat has an inspired eye for framing and detail that most people would kill for.

Thankfully our resident literary genius Simon Smithson gets out into the world, and managed to snatch some time with Nat.

We are currently looking for:

• Photographers
• Writers
• Designers
• Artists
• Affiliate communities / groups / companies

LATER...

Still reading? Wow, you must have really gotten into this issue! Well, we are sorry to say this, but your at the end of our issue for this month. It has been a fun ride, and once again we thank you for sticking by us and reading, contributing, and generally fucking around on the internet. What would we do without you? (Post videos on YouTube...or be a loser and blog about mundane shite... -Ed.).

Of course, we'll be back again next month! Thankfully, we choose Melbourne Pixel over sleep, and are proud of it! Keep an eye out for some cool shit: updates, new killer articles, slick links to sites that will ease your soul, and Blue Giant representing. Plus your chance to win some cool stuff!

If your still stuck for things to do, swing by Lost At E Minor for more on the Aussie scene, and we'll see you at the pub if your still craving a slice of insanity!

Peace Out!

OUT AND ABOUT

We like to get outside every few months, and remind ourselves just what fresh air is all about. But where to go?

Section Eight Container Bar
27 - 29 Tattersalls Lane
Melbourne VIC

Ph: 0422 972 656

A feather in the cap of Melbourne's bar scene, Section Eight Container Bar is a meeting between a house party and a cargo ship, steeped in the flavour of the Chinatown locale. But the strength of Section Eight is in more than just its appearance- it can back up the promise of a great night out with a massive bar selection and DJs dropping beats three nights a week.

The theme of the place is all things shipping: set up in a fenced-off enclosure around a city car park, Section Eight features packing crates as seats and architecture and a converted shipping container as the bar...more

Hints of the Orient come through in the hanging Chinese lanterns and the mural that reigns supreme over the outdoor space.

The art on the surrounding walls, a new addition since the arrival of Section Eight, provides the finishing touch. Section Eight caters to the daytime customer as well, opening at 8am from Monday to Friday and 3pm on the weekend, ready to supply light breakfasts or lunches and a cup of coffee, or, on Sundays, a gourmet sausage sizzle.

But at night is when Section Eight comes into its own. Even when not hosting one of its cabaret nights on the last Saturday of the month, or holding an 8@8 function on the eighth of the month, it’s the place to go for a friendly vibe, funky beats, and a great night out.
