ISSUE #06

Another month, another issue! And this time it's #06! That's right, half a year we have been messing around on your screen, bringing Australian creative talent to the fore! It's a shame we are a few days late on this issue, but who knew September only has 30 days? Well, i guess we did know that, but an office relocation and busted internet contributed to the general chaos that is the production of each issue...

But enough of that! It's on to the good stuff! We have an absolutely punishing issue for you this month, packed full of all the regular hot websites, resources and bars, another fine (yet disturbing... -Ed.) illustration from the mastermind behind Blue Giant, and of course the exceptional creatives that are featured in this months articles.

So read on, fellow enthuisiasts! Below are five more brilliant people who snagged our attention for this month.

It's Not All Technical
Jumping across to Australia over 17 years ago, Karen Hinde has brought talent to this country that we should all be thankful for. From enduring rubbish tips at 5 am, to pushing the organic elements of her subjects, Karen is going nowhere but up.

Although she is still developing her style and niche in the fickle world of photography, Karen has a brilliant eye for lighting, colour and form that makes us blush at our amatuer attempts, and wish we had listened and learned as attentively as she when we were first developing those creative juices.

Karen caught up with our much loved photograhper Cat for some Q and A...

Create for Multiple Platforms
An international Aussie creative with style bursting from every pore, Luke Feldman is currently sharing his brilliant down-under talent with the lucky people over in San Fransico. An established and skillful vector artist, the twisted imagery Luke produces brings to mind the chaotic undertones of the classic illustrations associated with stories such as Alice In Wonderland, and yet scores high in unique style every time you flick to a new piece.

Our resident writer and general fruitcake Simon caught up with Luke to snatch at his brain for some background info...

Clashing With Craft
Greeting cards. Always a black abyss of choice. Is this one too sentimental for a best mate? Is that one too rude for Aunt Susan? Basically the only rule of thumb you could go by is that if it was a Far Side card, odds were that it was going to go down ok, and you'd also look a bit clever. But as Tarnya Chambers, creator of Loveland Studios, points out on her website, 'most greeting cards suck harder than a hooker that's picked up Charlie Sheen.'

After Tarnya contacted us about her unique range, we sent our resident writer Simon off to find out what she is up to here in our very own backyard.

Cut the Crap, Back to the Music
When a band from Alaska decide that Australia is a destination that, above all others, they need to add to their tour, you can expect (of course... -Ed.) someone from the Melbourne Pixel team to be front and center at the show, bashing around with the other fans and celebrating their first tour down under, making sure they wont forget this wide brown land that cost so much to visit.

So in steps Rob Tennant, our resident 'pit' expert, and general lover of anything that will blow his ear drums. He is also a master of sneaking backstage, or winging backstage access to bands that others could only dream of meeting. He kicked it at the brutal 36 Crazyfists concert last month, and got us a close up we never expected would be possible...

What You Can't Imagine

Despite our most vicious attempts for attention, this is our first break into featuring Aussie creatives immersed in the acting genre of the industry. And what better two people to have break that mould than Ben Esler and John Kohn, two no-bullshit creatives from down-under who are attempting to break the mould of 'Australian actors are from Neighbours'.

Our ever-vigilant resident writer Simon caught up with these two, despite heaving study for them in New York, and asked just what the hell is going on?!?

We are currently looking for:

• Photographers

• Designers
• Artists
• Affiliate communities / groups / companies

LATER...

Well, that's all from us this month! It's been a fucking fun ride so far, and as far as we know, it'll just keep getting better! We'd like to shout out to all the wonderful people who helped make one more issue of Melbourne Pixel happen, as well as a big wave to our killer supporters Lost At E Minor, WATIM, Pixel Surgeon, Design Is Kinky, Hungry Zine and Media Temple. Where would we be without your help and love?

We'll see you next month for some continued creative debauchary, as well as all the regular crazy shit we throw your way! Keep your eyes out for the upgrades as they happen, and some bloody huge ones coming up in the next few months that you won't miss unless your blind (and if you are, your not reading this so...crap -Ed.).

Much love to all our readers and supporters out there, keep it up! And a special mention to Simon Smithson for all his hard work toward this nutty publication. Check out his new MySpace page (shudder... -Ed.) for some more of his writing.

Peace Out!

OUT AND ABOUT

We like to get outside every few months, and remind ourselves just what fresh air is all about. But where to go?

Bar None
Downstairs
72 Auburn Parade
Camberwell VIC

Ph: 9882 1086

www.barnone.com.au

Hidden away just off Camberwell’s main shopping strip, Bar None is a classy little establishment that specializes in delivering quality drinks in a groovy atmosphere.

Open from Tuesday to Sunday, during the week Bar None is the perfect place to meet friends, relax after a hard day’s work, or increase your knowledge of classic and contemporary cocktails...more

. If you should get hungry along the way, a range of bar snacks is available to line your stomach.

While at Bar None take the opportunity to look as some of the artwork featured on the walls or put your brain on hold and watch one of the movies up on the projector that dominates the room. And lazy people rejoice- the full table service means that you once you’ve sat down, you can stay in that position all night long.

The cunning partitioning of the space means that it doesn’t matter if you’re with a large group or small, you’ll have some space all to yourself- important when you’re kicking back to some of the funky tunes on the sound system, all of which are selected to help you unwind, whether they’re classic mo-town or new-school lounge music.

The must-try for Bar None is the Challenge The Bartender competition held on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, an innovation that’s been featured in Bartender magazine. If it’s a relaxed, groovy night that you’re looking for, then Bar None has all the ingredients that you need.
