ISSUE #07

Here we go again! It's the start of a new month and a fresh new issue of Melbourne Pixel has hit the cyberspace shelves! Welcome to Issue #07! With summer just around the corner and the weather improving, it's becoming harder and harder to not just drop everything, grab the car and a few brews, and hit the beach!

But instead, we are doing the next best thing and hitting you lucky readers up with some sweet creative talent being pumped into this wonderful country. Once again we have some great articles and interviews for you, not to mention the usual hot websites, resources and bars, and a crazy monkey from the mastermind behind Blue Giant, Matt Whittington.

We also say again a massive 'respect' to the talented Mr. Smithson for his dedication and attitude towards our little endeavor. So get your reading pants on and get into it!

New Work, Traditional Style
Hailing from the US and now studying at Swinburne University in Melbourne, Lelia Thomas is a unique individual with a unique style. Whether she is delving into photography, art, writing, or web design, Lelia brings to the table a traditional feel, yet with new technology and a new perspective. Lelia contacted us a few weeks ago and after one look through her website, and a quiet smile, we sent Simon Smithson off to find out more about the creative mind behind what we were seeing.

Bordering the Bizarre
Dane Flighty describes his work as existing in a state of dreamlike chaos, and that’s exactly the phrase to use. His illustrations border on the bizarre, sometimes looking like what Giger would create if he was making a children’s book. People, animals, and strange alien creatures are put through the blender of Flight’s mind and what comes out is a strange combination of all of them.

Straight from the pen of our resident 'i like strange stuff' Simon, we were able to get behind the scenes to speak to the creator of the infamous DoubleHappy.net

White, Dry, Clean and Fresh
Adam contacted us a few weeks ago, but we had been aware of his Force Twelve project before hand, having come across his very slick website on an unrelated matter. His style could never be imitated, it's just that iconic, and with a background that stems from type stencils, an old Letraset, and an array of Rotoring pens, Adam proceeded to study and develop his own talented styling that immediately grabs your attention. Added to that, I am going to be quoting him for a long time to come: 'I believe no amount of study can prepare you for a life in design'.

We caught up with Adam to get some questions answered on his development in the world of design.

Effected
The Butterfly Effect have long been one of the greatest exports to come out of the sunny state of Queensland. With a long history of great tours, an explosion onto radio and TV music shows, and a vocalist that continues to stand out from the genre of Australian Rock like no other, TBE are one of our favourite bands to see live. We never miss a show when they are in town.

Our very own mosh-addict Rob was at their latest show at The Metro in Melbourne (of course... -Ed.) and managed to not only grab some great shots, but also get himself in a great position to enjoy the show from every angle.

Riff's Until the Cows Come Home

With the music industry in this country as complicated as ever, and with a decline in the 'rock-is-the-new-rock extravaganza', coming across a band of industry veterans who can still develop and play with a passion and sound that blows you away from the first riff is a very hard thing to do.

Enter Electric Mary. With their new EP ready to launch, and a knowledge of the Melbourne rock scene that can only come from years of hard work and explosive live shows, Simon caught up with front man Rusty Brown (aka Bear) to find out just what's happening in the world of Electric Mary.

LATER...

It's that time of the issue again, where you reach the end of the main page and wonder just what to do now...well, as always the Pixel team has got you covered!

Of course first up, scroll back to the top and see if there was anything you missed...c'mon! You know you want to! No? Still here? Read everything? Ok, never fear! We have plenty more to tickle your fancy! You could spend the rest of you day telling everyone you know, and even people you don't about Melbourne Pixel...

In fact, here is a challenge for you! Each issue, go up to some random person in the street and, before they belt you one and run off due to public paranoia, tell them to visit us here in this little corner of the web...you know we'll be doing this too. Not only do you help us keep on moving along, but your helping a stranger too!

Also, you could spend some quality time with any of our kick ass supporters like Lost At E Minor, WATIM, Pixel Surgeon, Design Is Kinky, Hungry Zine and Media Temple. They love us. You love us (right? -Ed.). Instant friendship!

We'll see you next month for our bumper Xmas issue (or Issue #08, whichever comes first...). Thanks again for reading!

Peace out!

OUT AND ABOUT

As you may or may not of noticed, we like to get outside every few months, and remind ourselves just what fresh air is all about. Unfortunately this was not one of those months...

Yes, we did venture outside, and even stumbled back in again on a few of those nights...but unfortunately nothing seemed to stand out for any of us. Depressing, no?

So at random, we picked this crazy little bar in Melbourne, Victoria to feature in this issue. Enjoy!

Just picture it: your heading down Bridge Rd, stopping for a drink at each and every bar that comes your way, when suddenly you realise you almost walked straight past The Collection...for shame!

A great place for a quick drink...
